Does Health Insurance Cover Partners?

Health Insurance Policy pamphlet with a stethoscope on top of it

When you purchase health insurance, nay insurers will only talk about children and married spouses being covered under your policy. However, domestic partners may also be covered under your personal health insurance policy.

Two people living together both of the same sex or opposite sex may be declared as domestic partners and thus be covered under a single health insurance plan. Domestic partners have to fall under certain rules, however. They may only be covered under your health insurance coverage if:

  • You are both 18 years of age or older
  • You have lived together for six months or more
  • Neither of you are married to someone else or related
  • You are both financially responsible for basic living expenses
  • You and your domestic partner are exclusive
  • You share the same permanent residence with your domestic partner indefinitely

Keep in mind that not all insurance providers may cover domestic partners, and coverage options may be different for domestic partners than to married spouses.

It is also important to note that other health insurance plans may not cover domestic partners, such as Medicare and Medicaid. Health insurance provided by the government typically does not recognized domestic partners. Some Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans may also not cover spouses.

The extension of health insurance benefits to domestic partners is most used in employee health insurance or employee benefits packages.

Should My Partner Be Covered Under My Health Insurance Plan?

If you have the option, adding your partner to your health insurance plan can be beneficial to both of you. By spreading the risk, you can lower your insurance premiums. If your health insurance is through an employer, your domestic partner can also reap the employee benefits offered under your employer’s benefits package.

What Happens to Health Insurance When You Get Married?

If you already have a domestic partner that is covered under health insurance, you may see little difference when you decide to get married. On the other hand, if you do not have a domestic partner or they are not covered under health insurance, adding a spouse to your health insurance policy may save you money on your health insurance premiums. You may also see a difference in your needs for health insurance, so be sure to double check your policy and adjust coverage to ensure that everyone can receive the healthcare they need under your plan.
