As winter starts to settle in with full force, the risk of experiencing snow and ice storms can increase. These events do not have to lead to claims on your Utah homeowners insurance. You can help get your property ready for the worst winter has to offer by completing the following tasks:

  • Consider cutting back trees so there are no dead branches or limbs hanging over your roof
  • Regularly cleaning out your gutters and downspouts can help ensure melted snow and ice have somewhere to go besides leaking through your roof
  • Once a month, you should check if the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home are in working order
  • Getting your chimney cleaned and inspected may reduce your risk of a fireplace-related incident
  • Allowing faucets to drip when the temperature dips could help keep your pipes from freezing, as can wrapping the exterior ones with old towels to insulate them
  • Be sure to remove snow and ice from your roof as soon as the storm breaks.

When the winter weather does cause property damage, it is important you contact your Utah homeowners insurance agency to let them know as soon as possible. This may help ensure your claim is filed and processed in a timely manner.
